Atopex General Information
Atopex (generic name: Ciclosporin; brand names include: Atopica) is used for the treatment of skin allergies, namely atopic dermatitis in dogs.
Atopex (Cyclosporin) is used to treat atopic dermatitis in dogs. This allergic skin disease is normally triggered by allergens such as dust mites or pollens, which can trigger an overactive immune response in dogs. Dogs who suffer from this disease will normally need constant management of their condition. This medication works by acting on certain immune cells which may have triggered the allergic reaction. It helps to relieve symptoms of atopic dermatitis such as swelling and itchiness. Atopex is proven to reduce itching and skin lesions in the majority of dogs. Atopex is safe even when used over long periods and normally doesn't cause any serious side effects.
Atopex Recommendations
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your veterinarian. Give Atopex to your dog exactly as directed by your veterinarian.
Atopex (Cyclosporin) should only be used on a dog if a vet has approved its use. You will normally be told to give this medication to your dog once per day, either one hour before feeding it, or 2 hours after it eats, until an improvement in the dog's condition is noticeable, normally after the first 4 weeks of treatment. You should stop giving this medication to your dog if no improvement is noticed after 8 weeks. The vet may wish to perform examinations on the dog from time to time, to determine whether or not an improvement has been noticed. After some sign of improvement has been noticed in the dog's condition, the vet may tell you to administer a maintenance dose to your dog, usually once every 3 to 4 days. However, you should follow the instructions of the vet with regard to dosage.
Atopex Precautions
Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by the prescribing vet while administering Atopex (Cyclosporin) to your dog. This medication is only for use on animals, and should never be taken by or given to humans. Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the dog and the condition it is being treated for. As this medication may be unsafe for certain dogs, it is essential you always inform the vet if your dog is used for breeding and is pregnant or lactating, as well as if it has any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if it is being given any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products. Do not use Atopex in dogs with kidney disease, stomach ulcers, and certain blood disorders.
